Luke Bretherton

Luke Bretherton is the Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at the University of Oxford, where he is also a Canon of Christ Church and Director of the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life. Before joining Oxford, he served as the Robert E. Cushman Distinguished Professor of Moral and Political Theology at Duke University and previously taught at King’s College London.

Bretherton’s scholarship explores Christian ethics, political theology, democracy, and the role of institutions in shaping the common good. He is the author of A Primer in Christian Ethics: Christ and the Struggle to Live Well (2023), Christ and the Common Life: Political Theology and the Case for Democracy (2019), Resurrecting Democracy: Faith, Citizenship and the Politics of a Common Life (2015), and Christianity & Contemporary Politics, which received the 2013 Michael Ramsey Prize for Theological Writing.
