Richard Dawkins is a renowned evolutionary biologist , a popular science author and one of the leading voices in support of atheism and secular humanism. He first came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which championed the gene-centered view of evolution. Dawkins has been a vocal supporter of atheism and a critic of religion. In his best-selling book, The God Delusion, he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist, and therefore belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion — a persistent false belief in the face of strong contradictory evidence. He also argues that natural selection is superior to the idea of a god. Dawkins has stated that belief in God and evolutionary theory are compatible. However, he believes that atheism is the logical extension of an understanding of evolution. Dawkins founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, which promotes scientific education, research for the psychology of belief and religion, and secular charities.
