All of you who do science, all of you who teach or research or you’re involved in engineering or medicine or education, or biology or chemistry or physics—you are doing a noble thing. You are thinking God’s thoughts after him. … You are obeying God’s command given way back in Genesis to exercise dominion, to learn about, to be curious and discover and steward the earth.
An Enriched Creation
Scripture gives us multiple ways of looking at things, and a classic example of this is the parables of Jesus. Many of these involve looking at nature. For example, natural events like seeds growing—and what Jesus seems to be saying is look there is a surface reading of nature—and then there is the deeper reading, where you begin to realize there are levels of meaning that we don’t pick up on our first acquaintance.

Ian Hutchinson draws a sharp line between science and scientism. Scientism holds that all truth emerges from scientific study and explanation. Hutchinson, however, disagrees as he points to science’s inability to establish truth about, for example, the events that have occurred in humanity’s history on earth. He specifically engages Richard Dawkins assertions (from the book The God Delusion) that God is a scientific hypothesis that has been essentially disproved by science and that evolution explains religion as nothing more than a natural phenomenon.
