How does the harshness of evolution align with the idea of a loving God?

The idea of a loving God has always been central to Judeo-Christian theology. In fact, love is often considered to be God’s pre-eminent attribute. How could a loving God, who is supposedly capable of doing anything, use the seemingly harsh process of evolution to create the current complexity of life?
