Can evolution explain religion?

Recently, attempts have been made to give a scientific explanation of religion itself. Of course, a comprehensive explanation would need to explain everything from the believer’s sense of God’s presence during prayer, to the actual origins of religious belief. And while the existence of God cannot be proven or disproven by the scientific method, scientific explanations for the development of religious belief may seem threatening to faith. This response will also consider whether an evolutionary explanation of religious belief is compatible with the BioLogos framework.

How does the harshness of evolution align with the idea of a loving God?

The idea of a loving God has always been central to Judeo-Christian theology. In fact, love is often considered to be God’s pre-eminent attribute. How could a loving God, who is supposedly capable of doing anything, use the seemingly harsh process of evolution to create the current complexity of life?

What is the evidence for human evolution?

Current scientific evidence suggests that all organisms, including humans, are related to each other by their descent from common ancestral species. This response will look at recent findings from the genome, which supports this claim. The fossil records of humans and human-like creatures also helps to sketch the story of human evolution.

If human morality is an evolutionary artifact, where does that lead us?

It should first be stated that if morality was developed through an evolutionary process, and yet there is a God whose character and authority is reflected in this morality, then the ultimate truth of right and wrong would still remain.
