Biology teachers at Christian high schools have a challenging task: to present sound scientific information while being sensitive to the theological implications of the material and their possible impact on their students’ faith journey. Many teachers choose secular biology textbooks that are strong on content but devoid of discussion from the perspective of a Christian worldview. These teachers therefore spend considerable time gathering additional resources that will help students understand the relationships between science and religion, the domains and limits of each, and their proper use and place in our understanding of the natural world.

The BioLogos Foundation is committed to working alongside these teachers, as well as home school teachers, in a manner that respects the findings of science and is harmonious with the biblical message. A part of this commitment is the development of curriculum resources for the teachers and their students. To launch this initiative, the Foundation has hosted several focus-group meetings with biology teachers at Christian high schools, with Christian school administrators, and with home-school parents. The focus groups indicated that the greatest need is for adjunct materials and resources that parallel standard secular biology textbooks and present a Christian perspective on each subject area.

The goal of the curriculum project is to develop, test, and disseminate an array of resources that will complement the standard biology textbooks used by many Christian high schools. These adjunct materials will present a Christian world-view narrative on each topic covered in the standard curriculum. The materials will employ diverse formats to address apparent conflicts between science and Christian faith, to present strategies for integrating scientific understanding with faith, and to address growing concerns about disparities between accepted scientific explanations of the living world and the explanations often presented in Christian education.

The curriculum project is now in the fund-raising phase, and a full proposal is currently under consideration by a major trust. A preliminary proposal has been selected by a second foundation for submittal of a full proposal. The time scale for curriculum development is two years, and we anticipate funding decisions before the end of 2010.
