BioLogy by the Sea

BioLogy by the Sea

Middle school and high school science teachers are invited to apply to attend a professional development program specifically designed for science teachers from Christian Schools. Co-sponsored by Point Loma Nazarene University and The BioLogos Foundation, the program consists of two weeklong workshops. The first will be held during the week of June 24, 2012; the second will be held during the summer of 2013 (date to be determined). There will also be an interactive online component throughout the school year. This program offers a challenging and engaging professional learning experience while overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the campus of Point Loma in San Diego, California. Because BioLogos pays for board and lodging expenses plus a generous stipend to each attendee, only about 25 applicants will be accepted each year.

During the workshop, teachers will study and participate in lab exercises in an inquiry-based learning format that focuses on the process of how a fertilized egg becomes a full-fledged adult. These findings have interesting ramifications for how one views creation. The class will consider this in a manner that celebrates God as Creator and respects the fact that Christians hold different views about how creation has actually taken place.

In addition to the study of biology, the program includes regular worship, Bible study, and community-building activities. All of the professors involved believe that God created through the evolutionary process, and the program is open to all teachers who are interested in understanding this view, regardless of how they perceive the data when the program draws to a close.

Here is an excerpt from a letter we received a few weeks ago from an alumnus of the program:

“Good Morning, Darrel. Great to hear from you and BioLogos. Although I have to admit, as you know, that I do not agree with the old earth concept . . . I still have a dear place in my heart for the love of Christ your whole staff showered us with while at Point Loma. My life in science education is forever changed because of this experience. I will continue to teach our students to seek the Truth [and] to be open-minded about the evidence of creative design.”

For further details, please read the program announcement. If you wish to apply, please complete an application by April 1, 2012.
