On Origins: Our Readers Share Their Thoughts and Stories
A few months ago, we asked readers who had finished Deborah and Loren Haarsma’s book Origins to share their thoughts. Today, we’re excited to publish just a few of the responses we received!
I have just finished reading your book, Origins. I bought it several months ago as I was struggling with my feelings after going to an excellent exhibit on evolution in another city. I happened to be confronted by a colleague about my beliefs regarding creation vs. evolutionism last week and I felt he wasn't making good arguments for his young earth/literal interpretation of the Bible stance. This made me pick up your book, and I am SO glad I did.
Your book provided me with answers to questions, but it also gave me a heart to share what I learned. And I really liked your nonconfrontational, respectful tone. That is what I seek to emulate in discussions. I feel a strong need to pray for children who have been raised to believe the young earth interpretation is the only true interpretation. We need scientists, and so many of my friends who home school have such bright children. I don't want those to have their faith shaken in higher level science classes, and I especially don't want them to turn away from careers in science.
Keep up the good work, and thank you so much.
It's been a few months now already, but we had a small group of Australian students visiting, and they came to a Bible study at our apartment. I had a really good conversation with one student who is studying in the sciences and he said he "simply can't believe in Christianity because it doesn't square with science." I talked with him about that, and pointed to ways that, ultimately, science and religion by no means are nor should be mutually exclusive of one another. At the end of the discussion I gave him your book: Origins. He gladly took it and went on his way. I don't know how God will use your book, but I wanted to say how much of a blessing it was to have such a book to send him off with. As foundational as the Bible is to all of life, books like yours are invaluable resources to pass on because the further point to God and His sovereignty as well as, ultimately, just how foundational Scripture is!! Thanks to both you and Loren! Now I just need to get another copy of your book!
