The Week in Review - 2/1 - 2/5
February 5, 2010
Every Friday, we post a list of what The BioLogos Foundation has been doing during the past week on our blog and our website as well as any other important news you might want to know. Be sure to check back each week for our latest “Week in Review”.
From Science & the Sacred:
- John Walton Responds to Vern Poythress’s Review of “The Lost World of Genesis One” - In August of last year, concordist Dr. Vern Poythress (Professor of New Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia) challenged John Walton’s book The Lost World of Genesis One in World Magazine. We have posted Walton’s full response to the review on our blog and have extended an invitation to Dr. Poythress to respond.
- “The Flood: Not Global, Barely Local, Mostly Theological, III” - Unfortunately, there is no single word to my knowledge that could accurately categorize the [Genesis Flood] account. Parabolic Legend is the best I can do because although the genre is Legend not Parable, like a parable it sets forth a story as history with the purpose of teaching spiritual truth.
- “Yahweh, Creation, and the Cosmic Battle” - When it comes to the science/faith discussion, the presence of the cosmic battle motif in the Old Testament should send us a strong signal: don’t expect the Old Testament to inform, let alone guide the scientific investigation of origins.
- “A Muddled Theist to the End: The Missing Darwin of ‘Creation’” - Karl Giberson offers his review of the new Darwin biopic “Creation”, in theaters now.
From BioLogos.org and the rest of the web:
- John Walton on Understanding Genesis - In this video, Old Testament scholar and author John Walton offers some important reminders with regard to how we should approach a reading of the book of Genesis. First and foremost, says Walton, we have to approach Genesis for what it is, which is an ancient text.
- “Darwin Made Me Do It” - Free webinar on Monday, February 8, at 1:30 PM will look at human sin and its origins in light of evolutionary theory and its implications of the Fall and Original Sin
- “Creationist Board of Education Member Fighting for His Job” - Former chairman faces backlash for attempts to limit language regarding evolution in textbooks and curriculum.
