Deepak Chopra Discusses the Future of Science, Faith
March 16, 2010
Deepak Chopra, author on spirituality and mind-body medicine and contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle, discussed the debate surrounding evolution and God in a recent article titled “Does God Have a Future?”, previewing a debate at Cal Tech between Chopra, author Jean Huston, editor of Skeptic magazine Michael Shermer and new atheist author Sam Harris.
“In a scientific age,” writes Chopra, “faith is bound to lose out to facts in the minds of most rational people. Which is why millions of us are worried about God, even if the majority haven’t decisively renounced him.”
Chopra points to the views of Richard Dawkins and Francis Collins and posits that current science has “turned the tables,” giving humans a new view of God as a field of intelligence rather than an aloof, patriarchal figure. Chopra believes as humans evolve, so will views of God evolve, and the more humans understand consciousness they will understand its source. He outlines major science/religion arguments including the Big Bang, DNA and evolution.
