Evolution & Christian Faith Review Process

Pre-Proposal Review Process

  • 1. BioLogos staff will complete administrative review to make sure all applications are complete and internally consistent. Applicants will have 3 days to resolve any issues.
  • 2. BioLogos staff will randomly assign three panel members to review each proposal.
  • 3. Prior to starting review, panel members will have 3 days to recuse themselves from evaluating any proposal which presents a potential conflict of interest (e.g. collaborators and close associates, applicants from home institution, friends or family members) In such cases, proposals will be re-assigned to another panel member.
  • 4. Panel members will complete all reviews and give scores to all proposals without access to other proposals or reviews. Once complete, all proposals and all reviews will be open to all panel members. Factors considered during review include:
    • Relevance to program objectives
    • Potential for success, given track record of applicant
    • Reasonableness of budget, given proposal activities
  • 5. BioLogos staff will compile a report showing all scores and comments, as well as recommend a score cutoff. To get the cutoff, BioLogos staff will calculate the total requested funds of the top tier proposals and work toward the middle, stopping at ~2x available funds.
  • 6. Panel members will meet on a conference call to decide which applicants should be invited to submit a full proposal.
    • Members will have the option to bring back for discussion any proposal which didn’t make the initial cut.
    • Members will excuse themselves from discussion of any proposal that presents a potential conflict of interest. All members who submit proposals will excuse themselves from discussion of all member-submitted proposals.
    • Decisions will be made by majority vote.
    • The panel may provide extra feedback to guide promising proposals in a desired direction.
  • 7. BioLogos staff will notify all applicants of the panel’s decision. Successful applicants will receive any comments made by reviewers, as well as any general guidance from the panel as a whole. Unsuccessful applicants will not receive feedback. Decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

Full-proposal Review Process

  • 1. BioLogos staff will complete administrative review to make sure all applications are complete and internally consistent. Applicants will have 5 days to resolve any issues.
  • 2. BioLogos staff will assign three reviewers to each proposal, with at least two having expertise in the relevant discipline(s). External reviewers may be recruited if additional expertise is needed to judge a particular proposal. External reviewers may be suggested by applicants or by a member of the panel. All proposals will be judged by at least two panel members and at most two applicant-suggested reviewers.
  • 3. Prior to starting review, panel members will have 3 days to recuse themselves from evaluating any proposal which either presents a potential conflict of interest (e.g. collaborators and close associates, applicants from home institution, friends or family members) or which falls outside their area of expertise. In such cases, proposals will be reassigned to another panel member or sent out for external review.
  • 4. Panel members will complete all reviews and give scores to all proposals without access to other proposals or reviews. Once complete, all proposals and all reviews will be open to all panel members. Factors considered during review include:
    • Relevance and importance of the project topic
    • Specificity of project design
    • Clarity of assessment measures
    • Extent to which the project addresses a need in the church
    • Extent to which the project fill a significant void in our theoretical understanding
    • Creativity and uniqueness of approach
    • Long-term impact potential
    • Track record of applicant(s)
    • Potential for significant publication(s) or other project deliverables.
  • 5. BioLogos staff will compile a report showing all scores and comments, as well as recommend a score cutoff.
  • 6. Panel members will meet in person to decide which proposals to fund.
    • Members will have the option to bring back for discussion any proposal which did not make the initial cut.
    • Members will excuse themselves from the room during discussion of any proposal that presents a potential conflict of interest. All members who submit proposals will excuse themselves from discussion of all member-submitted proposals.
    • Borderline cases will be decided to ensure awarded proposals are well distributed according to:
      • Program Track
      • Institution type
      • Scholarly discipline
      • Geography of applicants
      • Denomination or tradition
However, project quality is the most important consideration, so the panel reserves the right to make decisions that lead to an imbalance in any of these areas. Effort will be made to select a fair proportion of applicants who are new to the BioLogos community.
    • Decisions will be made by majority vote.
    • Under special and rare circumstances, the panel may decide to award a proposal contingent upon the applicant’s acceptance of requested changes.
  • 7. BioLogos staff will notify all applicants of the panel’s decision. Successful applicants will have 3 days to respond to and negotiate any changes requested by the panel. Decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
