i About the BioLogos Forum

The BioLogos Forum is designed to foster a serious and comprehensive discussion of Christian faith and the sciences. We believe that charitable engagement of different perspectives within the Church helps sharpen our thinking and deepen our commitment to the truth that is hidden in Christ. So while many of the articles and videos under the distinctive Forum banner come from BioLogos staff and Senior Fellows, we feature a range of voices, including those that disagree with us and with each other. Unless otherwise noted, views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of The BioLogos Foundation. You can read more about what we believe here, and join the conversation in the comments section at the end of each post.

Collins poses, as the central question of his book: “In this modern era of cosmology, evolution, and the human genome, is there still the possibility of a richly satisfying harmony between the scientific and spiritual worldviews?”

What if they can develop an empirically sound explanation for how our universe originated? Does this rule God out of the picture? Or does it merely push things back one more step?

Some people who brook no “god of the gaps” arguments anywhere else look to these three moments as more reasonable places to insert God into natural processes: God spoke matter/energy into existence, God made life out of lifeless matter, and God breathed a soul into human beings.

Does Collins show that Evangelicals have turned the corner on the scandal Noll brought to light, or does the continued resistance of the majority of Evangelicals to Collins’s work (about 75% reject human evolution) show that we as a collective group still do not take the life of the mind seriously?

How should we interpret the Bible? What is the role of tradition? What is the role of science? Who gets to decide whether traditional interpretations need to change?

How can we avoid a god of the gaps situation without completely removing God from the created order? How else might we describe God’s relationship to the functioning of natural systems?

Collins’ original use of the term “BioLogos” was as an alternative label for the position often known as “theistic evolution.” Now this gets a bit confusing as “BioLogos” became the name for our organization that Collins founded (after the publication of this book). We continue to be dissatisfied with the label “theistic evolution” because as Collins said, most non-theologians are unsure how the term “theist” “could be converted to an adjective and used to modify Darwin’s theory.”
