Intelligent Design in the Courts
In this series, David Opderbeck looks at the Intelligent Design movement through the lens of legal history. He begins by analyzing the famous case Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, as well as how the courts handle the question of science in general. Additionally, he examines whether Intelligent Design can really be religiously-neutral, and whether that's even a desirable goal.

On December, 2005, Judge John E. Jones, III (left) issued his opinion in the now-infamous Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District intelligent design case. Like many thoughtful evangelical Christians at the time, I was impressed with intelligent design theory.

Many ID advocates vehemently deny that ID is a “religious” idea. They argue that the “designer” need not be “God” or any kind of deity. A significant problem, however, is that “design” and “intelligence” are social constructs rooted deeply in theological and philosophical speculation about ultimate meaning and purposes.
