Francisco Ayala is a philosopher and the Donald Bren Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, and a former Dominican priest. He is a popular author and lecturer on the compatibility of science and religion. He has received numerous awards and honors, including a 2001 National Medal of Science, the highest honor given by the government to scientists, and the 2010 Templeton Prize. We sent biologist Francisco Ayala a copy of Stephen C. Meyer’s Signature in the Cell and asked him to respond to our reflections on the book. We especially ask you to take note of his sentence: “I do think that people of faith may find in the world many reasons that support their belief in God. But I don’t think that intelligent design is one of them.
