R. Judson Carlberg
Board Member
R. Judson Carlberg is the seventh president of Gordon College. He has been integral in promoting the school’s commitment to science, and most recently helped inaugurate the Ken Olsen Science Center, an 80,000 square foot state-of-the-art science and technology center at the heart of Gordon’s campus. The dedication on Sept. 27, 2008, featured keynote speaker Dr. Francis Collins.
Carlberg is a native of Fall River, Massachusetts and a 1962 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois. He earned both his master’s degree and doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University and also earned a Master of Divinity degree from Denver Seminary where he now serves on the board of trustees.
Carlberg has also served recently on several distinguished boards including the Council for Higher Education Accreditation; National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; The Council of Independent Colleges; American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities; the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts; and the Christian College Consortium.
Carlberg is a member of The Annapolis Group, a select group of presidents from the top liberal arts colleges in the United States committed to promoting the value of a liberal arts education. He is past president of the American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities and past chair of the Northeast Consortium of Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts and of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
In 1999, Carlberg was one of 50 college presidents honored by the John Templeton Foundation for leadership in character development.
Prior to serving at Gordon, Carlberg held a number of posts at Michigan State University and later served as academic provost at John Wesley College in Owosso, Mich. After graduating from the seminary, he served as the assistant minister of the Galilee Baptist Church in Denver.
